Friday, October 3rd we woke up early to prepare for our most challenging outing yet! When we arrived they gave us several chances to cancel due to the high winds but since this was our only day there we decided to go for it! First, we had to Kayak 1 mile each way into the canyon fighting 16 mph winds and waves. Thank goodness Dana and I have been married for almost 40 years and have kayaked many times together. A two person kayak is more difficult to maneuver then a single! Once we made it to our landing spot, we changed into our hiking gear, ate a quick protein bar and headed 6 miles into the canyon! The deeper we went the more narrow and beautiful it became! What an incredible exploration! When we returned to the kayaks we set off against the wind and waves once again. To be honest I was ready to jump out and swim but somehow we survived. Our guide told us that that was the first time he hadn't had to tow people back when the winds were that strong! Yeah us! We were with another young couple and we kept up!
Unfortunately, when we returned to the coach, Dana found a rock crack in the windshild which had spread over 12 inches! Thank goodness two days prior we had gotten a rock crack in the jeep which he had repaired sowe had the supplies needed to repair it. The other misfortunate thing is that it put us hours behind schedule and we were now arriving in the Grand Canyon in the dark with 60 feet of vehicle! Yikes! We made it but "oh no" they canceled our reservation. This is not something you want to have happen but ESPECIALLY at a national park. The lady was very, very nice and apologized that it was their fault but that she only had two different spots for the 2 nights we would be there so we would need to move each day! The biggest problem with this is you have to wait for the other people to check out at 11 before you can move which means you are stuck at campsite until you get resettled! UGGG! When it rains it pours! Our second site was only 30 amp and our coach is 50 amp, no problem, we have a converter and we can be conservative and only run certian electronics at a time! WELL, the campground was over filled and they didn't have enough power so we kept losing power all night and it was 29 degrees! We can't wait to get out of the mountains and into warm weather again!
